Mission Mechanics
Under the current LandSandBoat implementation, Extermination begins with 20 Carrion monsters and completes when the instance reaches 20 points of mission progress.
| Mechanic
Current LandSandBoat behavior
| Carrion monsters
20 are present at the start of the assault.
| Undead spawn check
Each Carrion monster has a 1-in-5 chance on defeat to spawn the corresponding Undead monster, provided that family's Undead monster has not already appeared.
| Undead limit
A maximum of one Undead monster from each family can appear: Crab, Leech, Slime, and Toad.
| Mission progress
A Carrion monster normally awards 1 point of mission progress when defeated.
| Successful Undead spawn
If a Carrion monster instead triggers its family's Undead spawn, that Carrion monster does not immediately award its progress point. Defeating the spawned Undead monster awards that point instead.
| Completion
The mission is completed at 20 points of progress.
- As a result, a run requires defeating the 20 original Carrion monsters plus any Undead monsters that spawn, for a maximum of 24 total kills.
- This differs from older original-era descriptions that report a single Undead monster appearing during the mission. HorizonXI-specific behavior should be verified when possible.
Enemies
Strategy
- The mission is primarily a search-and-destroy assault. Splitting up to cover separate branches of the map can reduce time spent backtracking.
- Wide Scan can help locate remaining Carrion monsters.
- After defeating a Carrion monster, confirm whether an Undead monster appears before moving too far away.
- The Carrion Leeches are the most numerous enemy type, with eight spread throughout the assault area.
- Keep track of which Undead families have already appeared. Under current LandSandBoat behavior, the same Undead family cannot spawn a second time.
- Leave enough time to return to the Ancient Lockbox and Rune of Release after completing the objective.
- Open the Ancient Lockbox before using the Rune of Release.
